Zephyr Shore: What's In A Name?
Our family named our land Zephyr Shore only after we built our second home, Sound of the Sea, and began living there right by the water. Only then did we become aware of how often the gentle breeze flowed off the ocean and through the house. Whether we’re on the rocks at the water’s edge, where we had come to take the breeze for granted, or inside the house with the windows open, this breeze is a lovely feature of our land by the shore.
When I was in the sixth grade, oh so many years ago, my favorite song that our class would sing was “Santa Lucia”, a well-loved Neapolitan song from 1835. The line that I especially liked was “with this zephyr so sweet." That’s when I first learned the word zephyr – “a soft, gentle breeze”. So as we became more aware of how frequently this breeze graced our shorefront, the name Zephyr Shore fell into place.
“Con questo zeffiro cosi soave,”
“With this zephyr so sweet, Oh how beautiful it is staying on the boat, With this zephyr so sweet.”
May you and your family find your stay at Zephyr Shore equally sweet!
