Watch the cruise ship go past the house (around 7:00 A.M.) and look for the lobster boat checking its traps right off the shore.
Walk out on our rocky ledges and commune with the ocean. Some of you may want to do a little surf casting from our shorefront. You’re most likely to catch either Harbor Pollock or Atlantic Mackerel. Arrange with Tina to borrow our fishing gear; buy a license ($3.00!) and get advice from Hannah at Paradis Hardware Store on * Street in Town.
Enjoy breakfast at *Rising Sun/Sound of the Sea* or Café This Way.
Upon return, walk along the Shore Path and at the end, take the loop back to
Kayak on Frenchman’s Bay
Afternoon
Main Street. Enjoy lunch in Town. (Epi’s; Thirsty Whale; or pick your own place.)
After lunch, walk up Main Street to Mt. Desert Street, and visit Saint St. Saviour's Church to see the beautiful stained glass windows, including twelve created by Tiffany's and installed between 1886 and 1907.
Bring sturdy footwear for the hike along Schooner Head.
Take Ocean Drive (Park Loop Road) to Sand Beach Parking Lot. Swim (if you’re a polar bear!) Or watch the kids splashing in the waves. Enjoy the sun, then, when all are done with the beach, at the far end of the beach (facing the water, to your left), climb the rocks up to the Schooner Head Trail. Follow it, for about 20 minutes, to the old cannon mount; go further, or turn back to the Beach and your car.
Continue on along Ocean Drive, exiting into Seal Harbor. Continue toward Northeast Harbor, stopping on the right and park for Little Long Pond. Whether or not you have dogs with you, this is always worth a short stroll and sitting by the Boathouse; continue along the path alongside the Pond and take the right hand turn to follow the upper path back to your car.
Retrace your route back to Seal Harbor, turning left onto *** for a pretty way back to Bar Harbor.
The Thirsty Whale
Evening
You might want to pick up lobsters at Debbie Parsons’ shop on the right hand side of Route 233 just before entering Town. If she has wild mussels from Frenchman’s Bay, they’re an excellent appetizer for whatever dinner you’re making. And her sister’s blueberry pie, when heated and properly outfitted with vanilla ice cream, makes a fine ending to your dinner!
Don’t forget to check out the Maine sky, laden with stars, before retiring for the night! The driveway makes an excellent viewing stage.
