Commercial Street: Restaurants and Stores
Restaurants
Becky’s Diner:
Good choice for either breakfast (but the coffee is terrible. Get coffee at Rosemont.) or lunch. Or a quick dinner. Everything is good. Fish and chips, hamburgers, chowder, pie, etc. Moves fast, even if there’s a line of customers. On your right, across Commercial Street from Irving gas station.
Street & Company:
Seafood. Equal to Michelin two star seafood restaurants in Manhattan. Best to have a reservation, but 1/3 of tables are available without reservations (thirty minute wait—worth it!)
Ben Kay:
Sushi; Equal to Michelin one or two star restaurants in Manhattan. If you like sushi, you must eat dinner here! Or lunch. But the acoustics in this, their new site, are terrible. So just eat!
16 Middle Street (3 minutes from Commercial Street).
Commercial to India, then onto Middle Street.
Stores
Browne Trading Company:
Fresh Seafood; Caviar; Smoked Salmon; Cheese. They supply seafood and caviar to Le Bernadin, the country’s best French Seafood restaurant. Also, for lunch to go: Bagel or other bread with smoked salmon and cream cheese.
You can get a cooler here, and some gel packs (but wet ice is better), and buy more ice at Whole Foods.
LeRoux Kitchen:
Excellent cookware store. Also some foods. You won’t need anything at Rising Sun or Sound of the Sea by way of equipment, but you might want to carry or ship items you find here to your home.
Gorgeous Gelato:
Best gelato outside of Italy. (Owners are from Milan). Ignore the other gelato stores! You can combine a few flavors in one cup. Do so!!! Portions are generous.
Standard Baking Company:
Equal to best bakeries in Manhattan. Stock up for your time in Bar Harbor. Many items keep for one or two weeks. Bread, croissants and pastries are superb. Almond Gallettes (my Favorite!); Financiers (Emily’s and my Favorite!) Chocolate Sable Cookies (my Favorite!); All Tarts (my Favorite!); Frangipane (my Favorite Favorite!); Madeleines (Proust’s and my Favorite!)
If you have dogs in the car, be CAREFUL! They will eat the entire bag/box of goodies if they have half a chance! The chocolate is not good for them. Especially the Chocolate Sable Cookies. Buy their Cook Book. You’ll be happy!
